Hannah tingled from head to foot, then shivered suddenly as she remembered that, if they indeed married Father Lehi’s sons, they would not be travelling the few miles to Father Lehi’s house and lands. Instead, the boys had proposed taking them into the wilderness. To an unknown place. An unknown fate.
When Hannah learns she will be given in marriage to a son of Lehi, she dreams of raising children in the paths of righteousness with a worthy priesthood holder. Instead, she is met with unimaginable hardship an arduous journey, a cowardly husband, and possible infertility. Hannah had promised herself long ago that she would follow the Lord and His prophet, but when she thinks her journey is over, she is faced with an impossible choice between faith and family.

Daughter of Ishmael Promised Land Broken Heart edition by Diane Stringam Tolley Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Oh this was an amazing novel. It is not the normal kind of novel
i usually read and review. But boy am I glad I did. This book
had he hooked emediately. It is full of so many characters that
you end up falling in love with.
Hannah definitely by far my favorite female character of course.
She is so strong and faithful just like her father taught her. I
have to say she did not end up with the guy I thought she would
and watching her struggle with it throughout the book is just so
sad but shows her strength as a woman of the lord.
So many different twisting lines and intrigues are in this
book.I love how hannah struggles with both sides of her family.
Lemeul oh lordy I struggle with his character because at one
point i want to murder him then the next moment I see why she
loves him so much.
I emediately loved Nephi and I so wanted Hannah and Nephi to end
up together. Then you get to know Samuel and oh lordy he is
gorgous and kind and sweet how could you not adore him too so
then again I wanted her to be with Samuel.
I think Laman is that character you love to hate and I really
did hate him and every conflict him and Hannah had I wanted her
to just belt him and get it over with. I know wrong time for
doing that.
Absolutely loved this book. I read it in 2 days because I was so
hooked and addicted.
5 stars
I have mixed feelings about this book. It is the story of two families who leave Jerusalem about 600-700 BC and travel to America by the direction of God. It is based off of a scripture story from the Book of Mormon and the story line is heavily faith based. However I did not find it to be an inspirational story, it just used faith or lack there of as a basis for the characters actions. Since it didnt really have that inspirational aspect it made it hard to sympathize with the protagonists at times even though I believe in the story this was based on.
It did make me want to keep reading because I was interested to see what Hannah's final choice would be and how the author took the story but I cant say I enjoyed reading it or that I would recommend it. However that is just my personal opinion and others may like it, I just wont be the one telling them to read it.
Story and structure wise it was fine which I why I went three stars. The culture and traditions shown in the book were very fitting for the time period, no errors or plots holes that I could see. The plot moved a long just fine compared to the real scripture the book was based on and it did make you think about how you would handle the situations they were in.
This book will transport you to another era and into the mind and soul of its main character. Not only good. More than good, even!
I adore stories that take me to another land, another era and deeply into a character different than me. Diane’s new book is all those things and more. And really, not typical reading for me. Except that it’s a good novel.
This book turns on faith. I was raised Catholic but do not practice any formal religion. That had no effect on my enjoyment of the story. And also, I’m a big fan of Diane’s books; she provided me a pdf of this one for an honest review.
The main character, Hannah is Ishmael's daughter (of course). He heads a high-ranking Jewish family. Her father is cousin to Lehi, a prophet at the time. The prologue ends with this intriguing sentence
"What distance had been covered, both in space and spirituality, since her idyllic girlhood days on her father’s property on the outskirts of Jerusalem"
And in that distance, Hannah’s beliefs are challenged and tested in very big ways. While she was raised with a belief in the scriptures and gospel and committed to Christ, the family takes a left turn and begins supporting Lehi. Along the way there is apostasy, suffering and battles with their Lord. It involves the deadly sins of greed, pride and envy. Marriage to a man not of her choosing and not of her deep faith.
Hannah must choose between her Lord and her husband and son. Would she have the courage to leave her family to follow her prophet? As the story went on, I thought I knew what her choice would be, and then I wasn’t so sure. I won’t ruin the ending for you by disclosing it..
I loved this book. Diane's a story teller, and she tells this one so well. Read it and BTW, a great gift for birthday, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day. Enjoy!
I love historical novels for a more in depth look at certain time periods
I really liked this book. A bit different from my belief but enjoyable nonetheless. I enjoy reading well written books.
